This book combines modern female attitudes (read: funny and sarcastic) with a renaissance feel and, most importantly, magic. Zera just says whatever she’s thinking. She’s me but in a fantasy world. I love relatable characters. Be warned: this book does have its weird parts. For people like me, it’s craziness is intriguing and makes me like it more, I feel like it gives it more layers and isn’t like a book that’s afraid of the gruesome details. The main character, Zera, doesn’t have a heart, her heart belongs to a witch and so her witch can control her, so as a heartless she has this blood lust that is like another voice in her head. I wouldn’t say I necessarily love internal struggles because I want the best for all of the characters because they’ve been through so much in their lives, but that wouldn’t make a very interesting book. But if they HAVE to have an internal struggle, then this is a great way to go. It’s like, WHAT IS SHE GOING TO DO NOW? NOT THAT! NOT THAT!!! Oh, okay we’re good. WAIT NO GO BACK GO BACK!!! It’s an emotional roller coaster, let me tell you.
Okay now to the really important part. THE BOYS. My goodness I love them. I think Andye is worried about me. But who cares? They’re nice to look at and read about. These boys in particular are no exception. Lucien is a beautiful piece of words. His character is so well written and isn’t just blah. And his bodyguard is great comic relief. He literally made me laugh out loud. There’s just me sitting alone in the living room giggling to myself. I’m not antisocial, why would you say that? Rude.
