1. Was Summer of Sloane your first
attempt at writing a novel?
ELS: I’ve been writing my entire life, but started taking
things seriously back in 2008 – so SLOANE was actually my 4th
completed manuscript, but my first YA contemporary. My other stories fell more
in the YA Thriller and YA Paranormal categories, and there was even a YA
Fantasy in there too – so it was an interesting twist to try my hand at a

2. Have you ever broken a bone?
(Funny story, I broke my arm because I ran into a wall.)
ELS: Ouch!! A wall? That had to hurt! J Considering
I’m incredibly clumsy, it’s a surprise - knock on wood - I’ve never broken
anything…but I did dislocate my knee when I was skiing many years ago and had
to have ski patrol take me down the mountain in the bounciest toboggan ever…I
still remember every single bump and dip we hit, I swear! And I’ve torn my calf
muscle twice – once during gymnastics and once doing CrossFit. I think that’s
life telling me to pick easier sports.
3. How do you cope with betrayal?
Like Sloane, running away and keeping it far from your thoughts, or facing it
head on?
ELS: I think it really depends on the situation. I’m not
one to run away from anything and usually face things head on – but I think
with Sloane’s situation, she had the luxury of leaving for Hawai’i shortly
after hearing the devastating news. And sometimes getting away from it all
gives you the time needed to think…and heal.
4. Are any of your characters based
on people you know in real life? If not, would you ever consider doing that or
do you just prefer creating them from scratch?
ELS: I would say there are many similarities between my
characters and the people in my life – but there isn’t one person in particular
who any of my characters are modeled after. I think most authors think about
attributes from those around them, as it helps to get the character down on
paper – but in the end, your characters are going to tell you who they really
want to be.
5. What is your favorite way to spend
a summer day?
ELS: If I had one way to spend a summer day, it would be
sitting by the lake, reading a good book! But now that I have a little one at
home, getting him outside to enjoy the gorgeous summer days we have here in
Seattle…well, I think that’s becoming my new favorite way to spend a summer
day!
6. If you could go back in time and
give your younger self one piece of advice, what would it be?
ELS: I would definitely tell younger me to enjoy everything in the moment and stop worrying about things I can’t control. As with many teens, I spent so much of my teenage years wanting to be older, wanting to be out from my parents’ house, things like that…now, what I wouldn’t do to be seventeen again! Oh and I’d also tell myself that while it might not feel that way, great things will happen later in my life…and all of it will be so worth it.
