I really looked forward to reading this book. I love a juicy young adult, contemporary mystery story! But I started with a mountain of excitement, crossed a sea of confusion and ended in a field of disappointment. I realize we make a lot of assumptions while reading, stories would be too long without them. But this book left me filling in large gaps! Instead of guiding me through the story, I was left stranded at times. The big mystery, revealed at the end, even fell short for me. I understood what the author was trying to do...it just wasn't done well.
The main character, Ava, has it bad. And if you are hoping her life improves, you'll be disappointed. For a tiny moment her life gets better, only to become even worse than before. Although Ava eventually gains strength, it is in an unconventional way. Plus, the mean girls don't get nicer and the boyfriends remain deceitful. Oh! Then sprinkle in a few love triangles, (making it a love hexagon?) also at Ava's expense. I know it can't all be true love and champagne, but give this girl a break!
In the beginning of the story, Ava started a letter to her murdered sister, Kesley. The letter continued throughout the entire story. It was a unique way to convey Ava's relationship and ever-changing feelings regarding her deceased sister, which was refreshing because I didn't feel like Ava's other relationships were well-defined.
The premise of this story is so good! It just wasn't executed well. There was a nice twist, but even that was drawn out in the end. I want to love every story I read, it just doesn't always happen. Now, carry on and read this book! I WANT you to change my perception of Frayed by Kara Terzis!
