I've never had a bad experience with Gena Showalter (COLE FREAKEN HOLLAND FROM THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS?!?!). Firstlife was no exception.
All I knew going in to this book was that it was by Gena, so I was guaranteed a sassy main character and a healthy dosage of drool-worthy males. All orders were delivered.
The story starts in an insane asylum.
Just kidding, not as creepy as AHS. Our main character, Tenley, was put in there for refusing to sign with the afterlife her parents want her with. When people die in their "firstlife" they end up in their everlife which is one of three places: Troika - basically the land of light and justice, Myriad - for power hungry people, and Many Ends - those that died without having signed with one of the other realms. The two main realms have been at constant war with each other, trying to permantly eradicate the other from existence. Tenley's parents want her with Myriad, but she's not sure if that's the right fit for her. Luckily, the realms are dying to get their hands on Ten, so they sound beautiful beautiful boys to win her over. And before you start thinking LOVE TRIANGLE, ease your mind, there is none.
There's Killian WHO HAS AN IRISH ACCENT and let's just say yum. He's trying to get her to sign with Myriad, and honey, Tenley is one strong-willed girl to resist him for the amount of time she does. Then there's Bow and Archer who are just wonderful human beings. Gena crafts such real and hilarious characters.
It was a really fun read, full of action, attitude, and attraction. The three vital A's of literature.
