At a Glance:
Honestly, I expected to love this book. Cannibals are basically the equivalent of zombies on the coolness scale, but parts of this story were just wayyy too much. I couldn't really tell you what genre this book actually is. I went into it thinking it was a western with cannibals, because hello, that sounds epic, but Revenge and the Wild is a mix of fantasy, western, mystery, paranormal, steampunk, and science fiction. At points, I was completely confused on what exactly is going on, because it felt like the author just threw every aspect of every book into one book. But I pushed through, and ended up upping my rating, because of the ending.
Cover:
At first glance, the cover is really eye catching. I liked it from the start, but after finishing the book, I like that a lot of the aspects of the cover have a lot to do with things that actually happen in the story.
Action:
Revenge and the Wild is not short on action! It's a mystery sort of, so there's a lot of twists and turns popping up every few pages. Enough to make you want to find out how the story ends!
Romance:
Sigh. Another book with multiple romances. Of course, there's the main guy, Alistair, who was okay. Not super swoony or anything, but I shipped him more than the mayor's son or the vampireno I'm not kidding. Although I admit I ended up caring about the vampire by the end of the story. I just wish there would have been more focus on just her and Alistair despite his dreadful name.
Heroine:
Despite being rash and at some times stupid, Westie was a solid heroine. She had me rooting for her within the first few pages. That girl is a hoot, and has a TON of sass, which everyone knows I love. Not only was Westie mostly likable, but she had a lot of flaws that made her seem even more realistic to me.
Hero:
Alistair took a long time to grow on me, because of the way he kept his distance around Westie. He was so aloof at times with her that I thought he was being a total douche canoe, until the reason why was revealedwhich isn't until the near end. But then, he all of the sudden is the best boyfriend ever for Westie, and it ended up being a little weird. Even if there sexy times are quite steamy. He does stand by Westie, and helps her in any way he can. In the end, I grew to care about him, but it just took too long, in my opinion.
Favorite Supporting Character:
110% Bena. She's basically Mother Hen of Westie. She found Westie after she got away from the cannibals, and brought her back to her Indian tribe to heal her. Not only is she like Westie's mother, but also a best friend, who helps her carry out her nefarious plans.
Something I loved:
I really loved the idea of the novel, if that makes sense. Also, the cannibal part! That was awesome, and not something you really see in YA, unless it's zombies. Modesto did not shy away from the gory scenes either, which were realistically accurate and gruesomely written.
Something(s) I hated:
Unfortunately, I was disappointed with her decision to take the 'easy way out' to 'cure' her alcoholism. I felt like that was a subject that was kind of glossed over when she needed to sober up ASAP despite the fact that she had a serious problem. There is no overnight 'cure' for being an alcoholic, regardless of if there is magic. It just rubbed me the wrong way.
Also, where Westie gets feelings for practically 3 guys. Love Squares are LAME.
Cliffhanger?
Nope. This is a one book fantasy, which explains the amount of world building thrown into it. It can be a little overwhelming and it definitely slowed the plot down for me, enough that I started to skim over long descriptions.
Would I recommend it?
Yeah, I would, but it wouldn't be a top choice to pop in my head to recommend to someone.
Did my friends like it?
Yes! There's a ton of five star ratings from my friends on goodreads. Maybe I'm the black sheep?
Will I buy/keep it/read the sequel?
Buy? No. Keep? Yeah. No sequels, it's a stand alone.

I have absolutely no idea, because this book was unique, but then again it wasn't, because of all the different genres it could fall into.
