Due to an unexpected disease, Maggie lost her sight. Six months of torturing herself and the people surrounding her, Maggie finds herself in trouble. After one of her visits with her probation officer, Maggie falls and hits her head. From this moment, she meets a kid named Ben, and the funny thing is she is able to see him… and his surroundings.
The more I tried to like this book, the less it was working for me. Maggie seeing Ben is one thing, but seeing his surrounding is another thing. Then there is one part where Ben is really far from Maggie and yet she was able to see his every movement… Yeah, for a blind girl, she certainly can see a lot. With her dry humour it was really hard liking her. It really was tough feeling sorry for her.
The one thing I did love about this book is Ben. He is one of those kids that annoys you when you first meet. Next thing you know, he steals your heart. WHEN DID THIS HAPPENED?! With his charming charisma and uplifting spirit, it’s really hard not to fall in love with him.
The One Thing is not a favorite of mine. It was hard to enjoy but I did love Ben! Maybe I'm just a black sheep with this one? “Baaa”.

Then, by the end of the book you’re asking yourself, “WHAT?” Unfortunately, I had this experience with this book. Although it was explained and predictable, I still couldn’t click with the reason why Maggie, a blind girl, was able to see Ben and his surrounding. Maybe I’m just hard headed? But I’m not, since I love sad stories!
Now Maggie has a probation officer. But she isn't interested in rehabilitation, not when she's still mourning the loss of her professional-soccer dreams, and furious at her so-called friends, who lost interest in her as soon as she could no longer lead the team to victory.
Then Maggie's whole world is turned upside down. Somehow, incredibly, she can see again. But only one person: Ben, a precocious ten-year-old unlike anyone she's ever met. Ben's life isn't easy, but he doesn't see limits, only possibilities. After awhile, Maggie starts to realize that losing her sight doesn't have to mean losing everything she dreamed of. Even if what she's currently dreaming of is Mason Milton, the magnetic lead singer of Maggie's new favorite band, who just happens to be Ben's brother.
But when she learns the real reason she can see Ben, Maggie must find the courage to face a once-unimaginable future...before she loses everything she has grown to love.
