My Rambles:
Edgewater was a book that I was really looking forward to reading when I first heard about it. I’m always intrigued by books that promise family secrets and unexpected romance! I’m happy to say that Edgewater delivered. I couldn’t put this book down.
I really enjoyed the main character, Lorrie. Being that she used to be rich, there is some expectation that she’d be like all of the other stereotypical rich girls thrown into a loss of fortune type of situation. But, Lorrie was just such a great character, and she was real. I also loved her relationship with her best friend, Lennox. One plotline of the book that I wasn’t expecting to be such a big part was Lorrie and her horse’s relationship. I absolutely loved it though! Even if you’re not a horse person (I’m not) you can totally relate to the love between owner and animal if you’ve ever had a pet. I found myself loving Lorrie and Orion’s scenes the most.
As the synopsis shares, Lorrie and her family lose pretty much everything for a reason that is unknown until the end. While Edgewater has mystery, it’s also really about Lorrie’s attempt to hide that she no longer has the money that has become her reputation, and deal with being left by both of her parents. Lorrie and her younger sister Susannah are pretty much on their own, being left under the care of their Aunt Gigi who is an inadequate guardian.
Gigi battles some serious mental problems, and their house, Edgewater is left unkept and falling apart. Sheinmel’s descriptions of the house through Lorrie’s voice were extremely vivid, and at times even funny, as a result of the state of the house.
There is a bit of romance, which I did enjoy. It wasn’t anything spectacular, but I was definitely rooting for Lorrie and Charlie to make it through to then end! You’ll find out his connection to all of Lorrie’s family’s problems, and I think you’ll be surprised…
Speaking of the ending, it was one that I didn’t see coming at all. You’ll get all the answers to all of your questions that are in your head throughout the book, so not to worry!
All in all, Edgewater is a fun mystery filled with friendship, family, romance, and lots of surprises! It will keep you turning pages to the very end!
