I am super excited to be a part of this read-along since this is one of my favorite series ever! I've already read both books multiple times because they were so awesome, and I just couldn't wait to read them again! If there is ONE BOOK that I could make you read this year, this would be the book!

But he, too, has a secret, and Kestrel quickly learns that the price she paid for a fellow human is much higher than she ever could have imagined.

Set in a richly imagined new world, The Winner's Curse is a story of deadly games where everything is at stake, and the gamble is whether you will keep your head or lose your heart.

I love getting into this world again. Kestrel is one of my absolute favorite heroines of all time. In the beginning of this book, you begin to get a sense of who Kestrel is. She is confident and strong, opinionated and compassionate. She may not be an amazing fighter, but that doesn't keep her from trying to become better. She has an interesting relationship with her father. You can tell that even though she doesn't agree with all of his beliefs and practices, she still wants his approval.

When Kestrel first sees Arin at the slave market, my pulse starts racing every time. I love that it is her compassion that drives her to buy him, and the fact that he can sing. His hatred for her is palpable, but it just makes the tension between them even more intense. I love that you get both of their perspectives. I think it really adds so much to this story, and their mind-sets are so different, even though they're both telling the same story. 

When Arin finally speaks to Kestrel, he starts to see that there is more to her than he originally thought. Of course this just makes the tension between them even heavier. I LOVE IT! Arin is just about the swooniest thing ever invented, that's for dang sure!

    The author approaches this novel in such a unique way, which is very apparent in these beginning chapters. Kestrel and Arin's relationship is incredibly complex, and their individual character development is very well done. Kestrel's world is also fascinating- the political and social aspects in particular. In many ways the society is progressive (women are allowed to hold positions of power), and in other ways entirely un-evolved (the nonchalant use slaves).


    The Winner's Curse is definitely one of my favorite reads of 2014, and I can't wait to get my hands on a copy of The Winner's Crime!

Finally, My Thoughts on Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins
