I'm reading a book right now called Mortal Fire by Elizabeth Knox. It is slow and strange, and sometime confusing...and just plain weird, but I really like it. I had a similar feeling when I read her Dreamhunter duology. It's not the easiest read, and I know that it's not going to connect with a lot of people, but I still just like it a lot. And I can tell it's one of those books that will stick with me (like Dreamhunter was). Have you ever had that experience?

I thought The Body Finder series was a bit slow and strange, but I really like it. My friends didn't like this series though; they couldn't connect with it. I will have to give Mortal Fire a shot. ;)

DeleteI had trouble getting into THE BOOK THIEF By Markus Zusak, but I was glad I stuck with it for all it's strangeness. It was totally worth it in the end.
ReplyDeleteI had the same problem with The Next Thing I Knew by John Corwin. When I finished it I Loved it. I keep pestering John about a sequel. I can't wait for it!!!!
ReplyDeleteI would have to say that Leviathan by Scott Westerfeld was at first really weird for me, but I knew I was going to end up likin it! And I really really do LOVE that series!!! It is AMAZING!!!

ReplyDeleteNot really. I am very impatient and I get bored easily so if I don't like a book from the start I usually abandon it. Also I read very fast, a book a day or so...
ReplyDeleteWhile reading Margo Lanagan's The Brides of Rollrock Island, I felt completely and utterly out of my element. It was very creepy and confusing, but I kept thinking it HAS to get better.... but it didn't (at least not for me).
ReplyDeleteFor me it was The Graveminder by Melissa Marr. It was strange, creepy, and I didn't really know where it was going to go all of the time. I absolutely loved it though. It was unique, entertaining and I can't pass up anything by Melissa.
ReplyDeleteAirborn by Kenneth Oppel was probably that book for me. At the time, I hadn't read almost any steampunk/alternative history, and so I found it strange, but I ate that book up! It was very good.

ReplyDeleteThe Girl With the Dragon Tattoo took me about a third of the book into reading it before I could get into it. Then it was suspenseful and kind of disturbing at times.

ReplyDeleteI had a problem reading Timepiece by Myra Mcentire. I adored Hourglass but when I read Timepiece the same feelings were not there. I didn't care about some of the characters or even remember who they were. I just felt what was so original in the first was missing in the second.
ReplyDeleteI would say Shadowlands by Kate Brian. I adored this book but was totally creeped out by a lot of it. Keep me on my toes. ;)

Patricia A McKillip's books are a lot like that. They're very poetic and sometimes hard to follow but her writing is just gorgeous and the plot always comes around and ties up in the end. She's one of my favorite writers.

ReplyDeleteHopeless by Colleen Hoover is definitely such a read which was painful and heartbreaking and yet stayed with me :)
ReplyDeleteDefinitely experienced that with House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski. It's slow at times, but a lot of what ends up happening in the book is super creepy and snags your attention because of how strange it is. Definitely stayed with me.
ReplyDeleteFor me, I would say that it was "If you find me" by Emily Murdoch. It deals with some serious issues, and is really deep. I just really loved it and couldn't put it down...
ReplyDeleteThe first that comes to my mind is Break by Hannah Moskowitz. It's definitely not what I typically choose to read, but I won a copy and really loved it. Also Catalyst by Laurie Halsie Anderson.

ReplyDeleteI think The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer was like that - but I really enjoyed not completely understanding what was going on. I mean, the character's mental state was so spot on that I sometimes lost track of reality. At least in the first book.
ReplyDeleteI think it was on The Jellicoe Road. The first few chapters were really the "What the hell was that?" moment. The book was told in a present and past point of view so I think that's the reason I have some difficulties with it. But then god I get to finish it, because it was WORTH IT :)

ReplyDeleteThis has to be one of the oddest books I've ever read, ever: Teeth by Hannah Moskowitz.
Teeth is a heartbreaking novel; is dark. Teeth is very, very gothic and depressing and sad. Sometimes I wondered if it was too sad, too dark, too emotive. There’s very little cheer and fun to be had in it. But it turns out it’s just the right amount of dark, sad and emotive for me because I still loved it.
With Teeth, you have two choices: you can either read it, or someone can hit you over the head with it. The end result will be the same: you will end up bewildered and wincing in pain.
It is truly impossible for me to express what this book is, what this book means, or the feelings it evokes.I struggle to put my feelings for this book into words, but it's incredible. I believe that Teeth is a special novel. The kind of special that only rarely comes into the world. Does that sound over dramatic? Maybe. But this is how I truly feel about this book. Just...everyone...read it, okay?

ReplyDeleteI had trouble with Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver. The main character was just so unbelieveably stupid that I stopped reading it for three weeks. But then I watched a video by Abookutopia where she said she always tried to get to the first 100 pages and then decided whether or not to read it. So I tried that too and now it's one of my favorite books :D
