So, you may be wondering why, if I'm a woman blogger, my blog name is Reading Teen. Well, here's my story!
I'm not a reader. At least I wasn't until my daughter, Kit, became a teenager. As she began to delve into the world of Teen/YA fiction, I started to wonder what exactly she was reading in these books. I looked for websites that would tell me the content of the books that were on the shelves in the library and bookstores (under teen or young adult), but couldn't find any good ones. How bad can they be, right? They're for teens, after all. Well, what I have found has been startling to me.
I can't believe some of the things that most teenagers are reading even at twelve and thirteen years old, and their parents have no idea. I started reading books before giving them to my daughter to make sure they were appropriate for her age, and I thought as long as I'm screening my daughter's books, I might as well share what I've found with other parents out there. So, I started a website called Parental Book Reviews where I keep track of what I've read and what content is in them. That way parents can make their own informed choices as to what they think is good for their teen/tween and what isn't.
Well, who knew what starting that website would create. Turns out that I LOVE young adult books! And I love the bond that reading the same books as my daughter has created. There's nothing more enjoyable than talking and laughing and sharing a book that we both love! Which is where this blog comes in! It started as a parental obligation, but has turned into a passion. And the best part is, that it's a passion I get to share with my daughter!
Kit and I
As if that wasn't great enough, my best friend, Amy and her two teens have started helping us with our reviews! So now the five of us are reading, blogging, and enjoying this newfound love of all things YA books together!
Amy and I with the authors of Amy's favorite book!
We love to give away books!! So make sure to check out our giveaways!
Want to see more?
*We love to Vlog (video blog) about books! Check out some of our Vlogs here

*Wondering what our favorite YA books are? Andye's favorite, Amy's favorite, Kit's favorite, Abigaile's favorite, Austin's favorite, or you can just watch us vlog about our favorites here.
*And check these out if you're interested in discussing the difficult subjects, like ratings on books, would you give your teen Crank, and whether or not parents are idiots for denying their teen books with the "F" Bomb.
Thanks for stopping by! I hope we see you again soon!

Happy SITS day! :-) I'm already follower, and read your blog regularly. I hope you have a fabulous day!
ReplyDeleteHappy SITS Day! I love the idea behind your blog, and although I'm not yet a parent, I can see how this resource you've created is invaluable to so many parents out there! That's also amazing that it created such a deeper bond between you and your daughter! :)
ReplyDeleteHappy Sits day! I already read your blog and I love it!
ReplyDeleteWhat a fantastic idea. I'll be forwarding your site to several of my mommy friends, and hoping you're still around when my two are ready to read the teen fiction! Happy SITS day!!
ReplyDeleteAs a teacher I first want to thank you for being an involved parent. I love that you are reading the books too and providing a review of the book. Congrats on your SITS day!
ReplyDeleteHappy SITS day! I have to admit that until the Twilight saga, I wasn't aware of the YA book genre. But since then, I am hooked. The Book Thief is one of my all-time favorite reads.
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to dig into your blog a little deeper and find other fabulous book suggestions. And although my daughter is only 4, I can't wait until the day comes when we share our books.
Congrats again!
Happy SITS Day! I thought you were a teen until I read your post! LOL! That's a great idea for a blog!
ReplyDeleteHappy Sits Day! You know I never really thought of keeping an eye on my pre-tween's reading list until now. I should have though, considering I loved Harlequin novels at too young an age! I love the idea of your blog and think you are doing a great service for us parents! Now following!
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteHappy SITS day! Incredibly interested in your blog as an English graduate student and reader of YA. Currently reading Riordan.
ReplyDeletehappy sits day!
ReplyDeletei can't wait to read about your favorites! i finished the harry potter series earlier this year and i haven't found anything to read since!
enjoy the day!
Happy SITS Day! What a cool concept! Have you checked out the London Confidential series by Sandra Byrd? It's a good series for tweens with a christian theme.
ReplyDeleteOff to check out your list!
congrats on your SiTS day!!!! what a neat blog!!!!please stop by
ReplyDeletegrats on your SITS day :D
ReplyDeleteI like your blog although I'm unsure why you screen YA/Teen books.. Unless it's a Hustler magazine or a Romance novel.. I don't find books to be much of a threat, like Crank.. I read it when I was teenager and it really had no influence in the choices I made day to day. A story is a story. However, I like that you have found a way to bond with your daughter and that I can find new reading material from your blog. So Happy SITs Day!
ReplyDeleteHappy SITS day! What a fabulous idea! I love it.
ReplyDeleteYou look so young it took me a second to figure out which one of you was the teenager!
Happy SITS day! Your blog is a great example of what life is NOT like with a house full of boys! Sigh! However, 3/5 of my boys LOVE to read - and the others can be enticed with either WWII historical accounts and the littlest - well, we're just throwin' everything and the kitchen sink at him right now to see what sticks! LOL
ReplyDeleteI love what you are doing!
Happy SITS Day! What a great idea for a blog! And what a great way to get involved with your daughter's life.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your special day. I'm off to explore your blog!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE the idea and premise behind your blog - how cool is this? My daughter is only 2 but I already think about being in your position. Can't wait to look around and I'm passing on your address to a few friends that I know would love this!
ReplyDeleteHappy SITS day!
Bookmarking for my future!
ReplyDeleteGreat blog.
Happy SITS day!!! I think it's great that you proof read the books your daughter reads. A lot of parents have no clue what their children are reading. Kudos to you.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on your SITS day....love your blog! :)
ReplyDeletewhat a great resource you are providing to parents out there. i just listened to a program on npr providing resources where reviews of children's books appear, but they do not review teen books. much like tv, reading makes a big impact on them. i commend your committment to ensuring the quality of the books your daughter is reading.
ReplyDeletecongratulations on your sits day!
Congrats on your SITS Day! How lovely that books have brought you and your daughter so close, and what a great thing you're doing for other parents of teens.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on your special day! You have a most interesting blog! I love reading YA fiction, old and new! Happy SITS Day!
ReplyDeleteHappy SITS day! Wonderful blog. My teen is a big reader as well and I've been thinking about getting him involved and write some reviews for me.
ReplyDeleteWhat a fabulous idea for a blog!
ReplyDeleteMy son is 7 years old and is reading the Percy Jackson books. After he read me a few things from the first book, I decided to read them for myself but I could never keep up with the voracious pace at which he reads ...
I'm so happy that there's a resource out there! I'll be back for sure!
Wow, your blog and reviews are amazing! I will be returning and spending some time reading, for sure! I have grandchildren who are close to reading young adult books, so this will be very helpful.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on being the featured blogger for SITS today! *woot*
{hugs} from another SITStah! :-D
What a great feature! From a girl married to the man that got “biggest bookworm” in highschool (hey hey…he also got “most likely to win a gold medal”), this will be an AMAZING site to see when our girl reaches an age where she’s reading. Thanks so much for giving parents out there some informed reviews...you're doing part of our jobs for us.
ReplyDeleteAny recommendations that are a must read for people younger than teenager age?
What a wonderful idea. I never thought about searching for such a sight. I will definitely be bookmarking your blog. I am blessed with a daughter who loves to read. I can't keep this girl in books. She goes through them so quickly.
ReplyDeleteOh and happy SITS day! And I hope you and your family have a wonderful 4th of July holiday weekend!
Celebrate Life and Capture It!
Patty
I love your blog. Thank you, and happy SITS day.
ReplyDeleteThis is such an amazing site! What a great influence to make teens read more. I know I wish I had...I suppose I can just take these reviews and apply them to things I want to read too! : )
ReplyDeleteWhat an absolutely great idea for a blog. Even for people that don't read much they can get ideas for books that are musts or have the cliff notes versions from your reviews. Keep up the good work!

ReplyDeleteHappy SITS day!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea your blog is. I will be bookmarking this site for use with my own kids. Thanks!
Happy SITS Day!! That's great that you read the books before your daughter.
ReplyDeleteYou get high praises from the SITS girls and now I know why. I think it's awesome that you've developed this strong bond with your girl through books. Reading is something that brought me closer to both my parents and I read everything when I was little, even stuff that was inappropriate. I enjoy teen fiction now even though I'm waaaaay past that stage, and your blog is a great resource. Happy SITS day!
ReplyDeleteCongrats on your sits day. I think your involvement with your kids literature is fantastic and inspirational.
ReplyDeleteI love your blog already. That is so nice you and your daughter read the same books and discuss them. I wish I had started reading for pleasure while my mom was still alive. She loved to read and was always trying to get me to read too but I was just too busy doing other things. I didn't really start reading for pleasure until after I was married (at age 43. I just started our book blog this month so will add you to my blogroll there.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on your SITS day--so glad I found you!
Popped in from SITS to say hi! I read and write YA, so so glad I found you!
ReplyDeleteHappy SITS Day! Thanks for putting all the work you do vetting these books. Something to bookmark for when my son is older.
ReplyDeleteHappy SITS day! I am looking forward to exploring your site.

Your site may just be a blessing for us!
Love this concept & I will be forwarding to several of my friends with teen/tweens & bookmarking for myself since I only have a few years til I have one... yikes! By the way, you guys look great! I couldn't even tell which one of you was the daughter at first!! The secret MUST be in the sauce!

ReplyDeletehttp://2readornot2read-loves2read.blogspot.com/
just stopped by from SITS!
ReplyDeleteLove this blog, great idea!
And I personally still love reading YA books, so, since I'm not a parent, I can still enjoy all these reviews!
Congrats on your SITS day! I have an 11 and 12 year old, and so your blog is very interesting to me. I think this is a marvelous idea you had and I imagine is a great way for you and your daughter to stay connected throughout her teen years. I am definately going to bookmark your site and use it to keep up on what my kids are reading. I think I'll start reading their books too, what a great idea. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteHappy SITS Day! So glad to discover your blog since I am both a writer and reader of YA books.
ReplyDeleteOK - I already love you! :)
ReplyDeleteI am a book lover myself (Have a seperate book blog myself) so I'm gonna mark you to come back.
I think the young adult books are so much better then people think. I read tons of them myself...
Happy SITS day!
Happy sits day and love reading blogs--have one too.
ReplyDeleteI love the idea behind your blog. I work at a comic book store (and I know that's not real books but!) where we work with a lot of schools and libraries. Graphic novels get a lot of kids to read. What kills me is the content that some schools/libraries consider acceptable for the teen section. A story with blood guts gore and absolutely no point is ok - because there is no nudity. A story where the main character doesn't change to get a boy interested in her not ok because a male character appears shirtless at one point. These are the same places that stock VC Andrews and Anne Rice for 12 year olds?
ReplyDeleteMost comics at this point even come with a rating system on them and you wouldn't believe how many parents simply don't care and let their young children buy books with content I wouldn't willingly sell to an 18 year old.
I love what your doing and I think it was a very smart thing for you to do. Have a great SiTs day!
Wow, this is great! I teach high school and will post this link on our resources for teachers site as soon as we get back in the fall.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on your SITS day. What a fantastic idea for a blog and to help encourage your daughter's reading. My son wasn't interested in reading until, in 3rd grade, I started reading the same books that he did. He always wanted to get ahead of me. Now, at almost 20, he has very sophisticated taste in books. One of my proudest moments was when he spent money he earned to buy a copy of Catch-22!
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your special day!
Wow, congratulations on your SITS day, and aren't I glad you are the FB. I have an 8 year old daughter who is just now getting into reading. I have a feeling your blog is going to be a valuable place for me to hang out!
ReplyDeletehappy sits day! wow...you better start reading! 76 comments already! have a great special day!
ReplyDeleteOh wow, a reading blog... that's like my favourite 2 things rolled into one!! Will definitely be adding you to my reader :D
ReplyDeleteHappy SITS day! I love YA lit; in the past, I taught high school, so I could "get away" with reading it. Glad to see others are still enjoying it past their teen years, too!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea!!! I am really challenged. Happy SITS day, and keep up the good work.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great concept for a blog. Love it! Congrats on your day!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on your SITS day! And thank you for this website. My children are getting to the age where they're going to start wanting to read YA books, and it's nice to know there's a place I can go to get some info about what they might be wanting to read.
ReplyDeleteYou have quite the full house over there! I've heard that YA is the hot genre right now, regardless of age, so your blog has come around at the perfect time.
ReplyDeleteOoh, and I love your layout! :)

I LOVE the idea of your blog! I too am not a huge reader but hear that young adult fiction may be just up my alley! I will have to read your reviews and try out a few! Your daughter is so lucky to have you doing this for her! Enjoy YOUR day!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great blog! I am JUST getting to this stage of reading with my daughter and love the idea of looking up reviews before agreeing to a book. Thank you for doing this!
ReplyDeleteHappy SITS day! I love this! There are so many books out there that kids should be reading! I have 4 brothers who are all about gaming/tv/etc and arent going outside. If I still lived at home, I'd take those controllers and hand em a book. But what book? Now, I can be super sister with awesome reads! Thanks!!
ReplyDeleteHappy SITS day! I've already passed on your site to my sister, a YA English teacher - always searching for new great YA books.
ReplyDeleteSo great that you and your daughter are able to do this together!

What a great idea for a blog! Good work and congrats on your SITS Day!
ReplyDelete-Aimee
Happy SITS day! I really love what you're doing on this blog and look forward to reading more. I have a 14 yr. old daughter who likes to read so I'm sure your site will be a great source for us.
ReplyDeleteSo fun! There is nothing that excites me more than a good book
ReplyDelete: ) Hope you have a happy SITS day! Can't wait to read one of your reviews!
Happy SITS day! What a great idea for a blog. Oh and you are so super pretty.
ReplyDeleteHappy SITS day! My first YA book was Twilight that I bought, hesitantly, at the airport book club. I didn't think I could relate to a girl in high school at my age. I'm amazed at how many great books there are. I cannot wait until Mockingjay comes out! Love your blog. Telling all my friends about it.
ReplyDeleteHappy SITS day! I love your blog! My aunt has been looking for something like this for her teen, so I passed along your info! Keep it up!
ReplyDeleteLove your site. I read a lot of YA lit- I'm a former middle school teacher and I liked to know what my students were reading. I still try to keep up so I'm not clueless if I decide to go back to teaching.
ReplyDeleteFollowing your blog now. Enjoy your SITS day!
SO glad that you didn't blindly let your daughter read! I learned a lot from books when I was a teen...some good, some bad.
ReplyDeleteI'm a big reader and love YA as well (something about the coming of age stories that really resonate) so I'll definitely be following your blog!
Wonderful idea! My son is 10 but reads at a 11/12th grade level and this is such a great resource. Happy SITS day!
ReplyDeletecan't wait to pass your blog on to so many parents I know who will appreciate this - happy SITS day - just became your newest follower!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great resource! I will pass it along to my sister who has a teen. My girls are still small! Happy SITS day!
ReplyDelete@JessRaquel
ReplyDeleteWell, the reason I'm screening them is two-fold. One, because she is still young and I like to give her age appropriate books. And two, so that I know what she's reading and am able to talk to her about it. Sometimes the books I've read have had difficult issues in them (like Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson). I still let her read the book, but I'm able to talk to her about rape and how if something ever happened to her that she can talk to me about it (or at least talk to someone). I just think as a parent that it's important to be connected with what your child is learning and doing.
Thanks for your comment!
Andye
What a great blog - love the design! Hope you are enjoying every minute of your SITS day!!!

Happy SITS day! I love your vlogs!
ReplyDeleteWhat an awesome and so very useful blog you are providing to all of us! I think this is a great way to make sure your daughter stays on the right reading path, while also being able to talk about the books and gush about how much you love them! In a girl's teen years, it's so important to have something to bond with her mother!
ReplyDeleteHappy SITS day! Happy reading!
ReplyDeleteCongrats on your SITS Day! I blog on dangerous teen trends and other teen issues (but not teen books), so I was going to add your button to my blog, but I didn't see one. I am following now.

Congrats on your SITS day! I love to read but not YA. And since my own daughters are only 4 and 2 I only have to be concerned if the autor of the Dora books has inserted a Spanish swear word ;)

Happy SITS day! I really love how you came to have your blog. It's so nice to see parents really looking into what their children are doing and reading, and now you enjoy it yourself. Love that! Hope you have a great SITS day!
ReplyDeleteHappy SITS Day! I love new books! Can't wait to read more reviews.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great concept and a very unique blog. Congrats to you!
ReplyDeleteCongrats on your SITS day!!!
ReplyDeleteHappy SITS Day! What an awesome way to connect with your teen. I have a 13 year old daughter and the distance between teenagers and their parents is scary. I wouold love to relate to my daughter through books. I love how you have done that here! Great job!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great blog idea! I'm sure many parents appreciate it! Congrats on your SITS day. Enjoy the spotlight and the bloggy love!
ReplyDeleteAs a teacher I TOTALLY know what you mean about book content! You have to be careful about what the kids are reading!!
ReplyDeleteGreat blog with a great premise!
Happy SITS day!
LOVE IT! I have a blog that I didn't know would turn into sort of what you're doing, but has- just because of the same reason. I was shocked at what school was having my daughter read. I am going to follow ya now! Happy SITS day!
ReplyDeleteHappy SITS Day!! I love this idea - I don't have teen but my younger sisters will ask about books and sometimes I wonder "should they be reading this?" so it will be great to hear what you have to say as well. and I am always on the lookout for fun new books to read myself.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on your SITS day. Well-deserved. You have a terrific and valuable site here.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on your SITS day! What a great service you're providing for parents. You really cannot be sure that what is being marketed for teens and tweens is approprate. More often than not those things are far from it. It's great that you're sharing something wonderful with your daughter, and your friend with her daughters as well. Communications, and sharing something your child loves makes for a healthy, strong parent/child relationship. Keep up the good work! Peace. ;)
ReplyDeleteCongrats on your SITS day! What a great thing to share with your daughter and a great thing to share with other parents.
ReplyDeleteLove the concept. I, too, have read some YA fiction over the past few years and been REALLY SURPRISED especially by how dark it can be. Keep up the good work!
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful way to do something special and meaningful with your daughter, and how generous to share it with the rest of the world! Congratulations on your SITS day. My daughter is 9 and is just on the brink of delving into the YA section. What fabulous timing! Jenn
ReplyDeleteCongrats!!! What a great idea for a blog. I hope I've passed on my love for reading to my daughters.
ReplyDeleteI always wonder how it is raising teens. I think raising a 3-year-old is hard, but I can imagine it only gets harder.
ReplyDeleteHappy sits day!
Very nice. I also read the books before my daughter, but this will be a great help as my daughter gets into more reading. She is 10 now, but loves to read! Thanks for this resource!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea. I don't have any teenagers yet, but I would worry about what they were reading. Now there is a resource. Great blog! Happy SITS day.
ReplyDeleteMother daughter book club! Genious!
ReplyDeleteWhat an awesome idea. You have found something that you should trademark and be established in all schools across the nation! I am going to start but my son is 14 years old, but I don't think that matters much. I like the boy-ish books around too. I do love your background picture btw... and GO TEAM EDWARD!!!
ReplyDeleteCongrats on your SITS day! What a great service to parents of teens! I don't have a teen (yet) but am going to pass this on to a few friends who do--THANK YOU!!
ReplyDeleteCongrats on being the FB! Is it just me, or is teen fiction so much better than when I was a teen? I love the reviews and how collaborative the blog is.
ReplyDeleteHappy SITS day! I love the concept of your blog & I think it's so great that you've taken such a deep interest in what your teen is interested in- as someone who was recently a teenager, I can say it means a LOT!
ReplyDeleteHappy SITS day!! I think I will always love YA fiction :)
ReplyDeletehappy sits day! its evening here in south africa.. i will be back tommorow to have a deeper look at your blog! Im a bookworm too so i cant wait to come back!
ReplyDeleteStopping by from SITS. Congrats on being featured! I think it's cool that you and your daughter read the same books and can share that. I have never been a big fan of teen or YA fiction. By the end of elementary school, I was reading at an adult level. Teen fiction bored me, so I read adult books. Some of the content may have been ahead of me, but it didn't affect me negatively.

ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea for a blog! YA books are awesome.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on your SITS day! This is a great idea, book reviews for teens. As a burgeoning teacher it's a good idea to know what the teens are reading. Kudos!
ReplyDeleteHappy SITS day! What a great idea your blog is. I am the mother of a teenager, who consequently does not share my passion for reading! But my 9 year old loves to read and it won't be long before she is looking at books in the YA section so I look forward to using your website for direction!

Wow what a worthy site. I actually like a lot of youth fiction myself so I can see myself reading a lot of my children's books first but still.. it's nice to have a jumping off point. Thanks so much for sharing your reviews.
ReplyDeleteHappy SITS day!
You are such an awesome mom! I love YA books too, and I don't have kids yet! :)
ReplyDeleteHappy SITS day!
I am so excited to take a little peak around, I love me some young adult books. I used to work in a children's book store and I'd just take home stacks of books every night to read.
ReplyDeleteHappy SITS Day... I am glad I have found you. My oldest is an avid reader and I preread what ever she was reading for a long time but I can no longer keep up. This will help me out!!
ReplyDeleteThat is amazing the bond it has helped you have! I love that and it looks like you and Amy will be reading plenty more young teen books w/ all those kids!!!!!!!!!! happy SITS DAY!
ReplyDeleteWell. Happy SITS day. I, too, started reading young-people books to see what my girls were reading. This blog is a great idea. I'll be interestedly checking this out :0).

ReplyDeleteI love this blog and go to it anytime I need a good read! As a teen... it's perfect! :) Thanks for all the hard work that you do! :)
What a fabulous service you are providing to mom's and I love love the idea of bonding with your daughter! I have considered starting to read what my 9 year old is reading! even though they are "elementary" I have the same desire to know what she is reading... and if it provides me with opportunity to talk to her... thank you for the nudge!! =) cute pic of you and your young lady!! oh... Happy Sits day!
ReplyDeleteGreat idea for a blog. Can't wait until my daughter is old enough to start reading with me!
ReplyDeleteThis is something that scares me - the thought of my daughter reading the books that I like! Trashy, sexy, mysterious... damn karma!! I found this site through The SITS and I am so happy I did!
ReplyDeleteHappy SITS day!!! Your blog is a great resource for parents!
ReplyDeleteHello from SITS. Great blog - very useful information for parents and a great to connect to teens.
ReplyDeleteI wish I could get my tween to read that much! I got her into the Twilight books but don't think she has read them cover to cover. I don't know what else to do to give her the book bug. Anyway, Happy SITS Day!
ReplyDeleteHappy SITS Feature Day!
ReplyDeleteHaving worked in a bookstore, I know that books for teens are not children's books. The subject matter can be darker, they deal with dating & relationships, drugs, gangs, crime & all kinds of things that you don't find in the children's section. I also know that parents can be unaware & concerned about content, so your blog is a great idea & a great resource!
Happy SITS day! I love the story behind your blog. I teach a second grade class, but I am going to pass your blog onto the other teachers at my school.
ReplyDeleteDefine "waiting for a long, long time." :)
ReplyDeleteHappy SITS Day! How wonderful that you read the books that your daughter reads and share them! Your site is such a valuable resource to parents of teens.
ReplyDeleteThis site is awesome and I hope you are still going strong when my girls are older (just babies now). Happy SITS day!
ReplyDeleteWhat a cool blog! I was surprised at how many gay and lesbian books there are on the YA library shelf.
ReplyDeleteHappy SITS day!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great blog! My daughter is not yet a teen but an avid reader... a total bookworm. So I know that I'll be needing your advice. Thanks!

ReplyDeleteI think your blog is great! I'm not a parent yet, but I've also started worrying about the content of the new YA books that are coming out because of my teenage students and my pre-teen brothers. So I'm not sure whether it's a good thing that the boys don't really like to read! =P
But we do read together, and I seem to have some success in picking good "classics" that catch their interest. Jerry Spinelli gets mixed reviews, Louis Sachar is a big hit, Donald Sobol is still in the "testing stage" but is looking good!
Love your idea of reading books before your daughter reads them. So interesting what you have found out about what teens are reading. Thanks for sharing with us all!
ReplyDeleteHappy SITS day!
Congrats on being featured!
